How Gutters Work, and Why They Clog

A gutter system does one thing. It catches the water running off the bottom edge of your roof and moves it, using nothing but gravity, to a spot far enough from the house that the soil under your foundation stays about as dry as the soil everywhere else in the yard.

No pumps. No power. No moving parts at all. Which is why the whole system is so sensitive to two small things: a slight tilt, and a clear path. Take away either one and it stops working entirely, even though every piece is still bolted where it belongs.

Six parts, and what each one is doing

Learning the names is worth five minutes, because it turns the vague problem of my gutters are acting up into a specific one you can describe over the phone.

A quarter inch of tilt makes it all work

Here is the part almost nobody knows. Gutters are not hung level. They are hung with a deliberate fall toward the downspout, and the installation standard is a minimum drop of about a quarter inch for every ten feet of run (National Gutter Authority (NAHB guideline)). On long runs, or in heavy-rain regions like ours, some installers go steeper, three eighths to half an inch per ten feet.

A quarter inch. Over ten feet. That is the entire mechanism, and it is why a sag you can barely see matters so much. Drop the middle of a twenty-foot run by half an inch and you have not reduced the fall, you have reversed it. Water now runs to the middle of the span and stops there, and standing water is heavy enough to keep pulling the section further down.

Every gutter is a shallow ramp pointed at a hole. Flatten the ramp or plug the hole, and it becomes a long metal bathtub.

Why do gutters clog so fast in Baton Rouge?

Baton Rouge combines two conditions that punish gutters. The first is volume: more than sixty inches of rain in an average year (NOAA / U.S. Climate Data), with the heaviest stretch from June through August (weather-and-climate.com (1990-2020)). The second is a tree canopy that never takes a season off.

  • Pine straw sheds nearly year-round and mats together into a felt that water cannot pass through.
  • Water oak gives you three separate debris seasons: leaves in fall, catkins and pollen tassels in spring, acorns after that.
  • Live oak drops its old leaves in spring, so a fall-only cleaning schedule leaves the gutters loaded all summer.
  • Sweetgum balls and crape myrtle pods are almost exactly the wrong size, big enough to wedge in a drop outlet and small enough to reach one.
  • Shingle granules wash off the roof constantly and settle into a gritty sludge in the bottom of the trough that a leaf blower will not touch.

Then the heat finishes the job. Soak that mixture, bake it, soak it again, and by August it behaves less like leaves and more like packed clay.

Size and count are part of how it works

Two gutters can look identical from the curb and move very different amounts of water. Five-inch K-style is the default on most Baton Rouge houses. Six-inch moves noticeably more, and it pairs with a larger downspout, which is the part that usually matters more than the trough.

Count matters just as much as size. One downspout serving a long roof plane means every gallon off that plane has to queue up for a single opening. In a slow drizzle it keeps up. In the kind of downpour we get in July it cannot, and the trough backs up and spills at the far end even though nothing is clogged. When a gutter overflows only during the hardest storms and tests perfectly clear otherwise, the answer is usually another outlet rather than another cleaning.

Where do gutter guards fit in?

Guards do not change how the system works. They change what gets into it. A mesh or screen over the trough lets water pass while shedding leaves off the top, so the channel stays open longer between visits. Under heavy pine or oak cover that is worth a lot.

What guards do not do is remove the pitch problem, the drop outlet bottleneck, or the fine grit that washes off shingles and slips through any opening big enough to pass water. A guarded gutter still needs eyes on it, just less often. Anyone selling them as the end of gutter maintenance is selling you the wrong story.

What failure looks like from the ground

Because the system is passive, it fails silently. There is no alarm, only symptoms, and they show up in a predictable order: water sheeting over the front lip in ordinary rain, dark streaks down the outside face, growth sprouting from the trough, a visible dip between hangers, then a dug-out trench in the mulch below.

Every one of those is the same underlying event. Water that was supposed to travel sideways to a downspout went straight down instead, next to your foundation, and it is doing that on every storm until something changes.

Keeping a passive system working

There is not much to maintain, which is exactly why it gets forgotten. Clear the trough and flush the downspouts on a schedule your trees set, not the calendar. Check the pitch after any year with a heavy debris load. Keep the extensions pointed away from the house. That is the whole program.
